What it removes
- Open password — the one you type to open the document. Enter it once and the unlocked copy opens with no prompt.
- Permission / owner restrictions — locks that block printing, copying, or editing. These are stripped too, even on files that open without a password.
- The output is lossless: text stays selectable and searchable, fonts and vectors are untouched — we don't flatten pages to images.
What it can't do
- It can't crack an unknown password. You must be able to open the PDF yourself — this removes a password you have, it doesn't guess one you don't.
- Max 50 MB source PDF.
Only remove passwords from documents you own or are authorised to unlock. qpdf rewrites the file, so a signed PDF may lose its signature — check important documents after unlocking.

How do I remove a password from a PDF?
Drop the PDF here, type the password you normally use to open it, and click Unlock. You get back a copy that opens with no password and has its print / copy restrictions removed. Everything happens in your browser — the file is never uploaded.
Can I unlock a PDF without knowing the password?
No. This tool removes a password you already have — you must be able to open the document yourself. It does not crack, guess, or brute-force unknown passwords, by design. If a file only carries owner / permission restrictions (no open password), it unlocks with no password needed.
Is it safe to remove a PDF password here? Does my file get uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded. Decryption runs entirely on your device using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly — there is no server, no temporary copy, and nothing is logged. Your PDF and the password you type never leave the browser tab.
Does it also remove printing and copying restrictions?
Yes. Alongside the open password, it strips owner / permission locks that block printing, copying text, or editing — so the unlocked copy is a fully usable PDF.
Will unlocking reduce quality or change the PDF?
No. The decryption is lossless: text stays selectable and searchable, and fonts, images and vectors are untouched — pages are not flattened to images. Note that because the file is rewritten, a digitally signed PDF may lose its signature, so verify important documents after unlocking.
